iOS 15 Safari Tips and Tricks

Apple introduces many new features apart from the user interface changes in Safari and some of these features can be accessed from the Settings app. Let’s check out all these hidden features, tips, and tricks in the new Safari in iOS 15.

Move the tab bar up

Newest safari version

With the UI changes in the Safari browser, Apple wanted to make browsing easier with one hand, so it moved the tab bar to the bottom. However, if your brain is not trained in this, you can still go back to the old design:

1. Go to the Settings app on your phone and select Safari.

2. Now, scroll down and go to the tabs section.

3. Here, you will see two options – Tab Bar and Single Tab.

4. Now press “one tab” and that’s it.

You can go to Safari and check that the tab bar is now moved to the top of the screen.

Alternatively, you can also switch between the lower and upper tab bars by clicking on the “AA” icon and choosing between “Show top address bar” or “Show bottom tab bar.”

Customizable home page

Another good feature introduced in iOS 15 is a customizable start page in Safari. Usually, here you will find favorites, frequently visited items, privacy reports, reading lists, etc. However, if you want to customize it according to your needs, here’s how to do it:

1. Open the Safari start page by going to a new tab.

2. Now scroll down and click on Edit.

3. Here, you will see all the options that can be available on your start page. You can simply switch to that item that you don’t want to see on the start page.

4. Moreover, you can also change the background image here or even upload your own by pressing the + sign.

Please note that you can use the same start page on all your devices as Safari syncs them through your iCloud account. For this, you’ll need to toggle at the top next to “Use Home on all devices”.

Tab groups

You can also create groups of tabs in Safari using the iOS 15 update. This feature is not new for many users because other browsers like Chrome already have this. To use tab groups in Safari, follow the steps listed below:

1. Go to Safari on your iPhone and open the tabs you want to group.

2. Now, tap on the tabs icon (two squares) at the bottom right.

3. On the tab screen, click on the option that shows the number of tabs now open.

4. From the next page, you will have two options to create a tab group – “New Blank Tab Group”, or “New Tab Group from this tab.

5. Press the second option to place the currently open tabs in the tab group.

6. You can now name your tab group, and click on Save.

The new tab group will appear in the tabs section and you can access it by clicking on the two squares icon and then on No. of tabs. To delete or edit a tab group, open the tab groups page and swipe left on the group.

landscape mode

Landscape mode in Safari shows your open tabs at the top of your screen and you can click and switch between them just as you would on your computer. This is useful when you don’t want to click the Tab icon to switch tabs. Here’s how to enable this feature:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone.

2. Scroll down and select “Safari”.

3. On the Safari settings page, scroll down to the Tabs section.

4. Here, toggle the toggle next to “Horizontal tab bar.”

That’s it, you can do to enable the landscape mode feature and follow the same steps to disable it.

Swipe between Safari tabs

A new solution to scrolling between tabs was introduced with the iOS 15 update. You can now scroll between open tabs instead of doing so by tapping on the tabs icon each time. Here’s how to use this:

1. Open Safari on your phone and visit multiple web pages.

2. Now, if you want to go to the next tab, just swipe from right to left.

3. Similarly, swipe left to right to move to a previous tab.

That’s it. You can scroll through as many tabs as you want by just scrolling.

live text

We have already talked about this feature of the Photos app before. As mentioned, this feature allows you to copy text from images and then paste it anywhere or you can even translate it. Here’s how to use this feature in Safari:

1. Open Safari and then go to the website with pictures.

2. Now select the image from which you want to copy the text.

3. Click and hold on this and a menu will appear, at the bottom you will see Show Text.

4. Now select the text from the image or tap on the small scanner icon at the bottom.

5. Then press “Copy” or “Select All” to copy all the text.

Website Shading

Website shading is a very useful feature for those who have trouble displaying sharp colors on different websites. This feature changes Safari’s interface around tabs and navigation areas to match the color of the website you’re viewing, so it’s easy for the eyes to lose track of how long.

Here’s how to enable this:

1. Just like you do with other features, visit Settings.

2. Select Safari and scroll down to the Tabs section.

3. Here enable the toggle for “Allow website shading”.

That’s it. Now when you open a website, say Facebook, you will see a blue tab and navigation area on Safari. You can disable it by following the same steps if it turns out to be annoying.

Browser Extensions

The latest iOS update also brings web extension support on Safari. You can install these third-party extensions from the App Store.

  1. First, go to the App Store and install the extension you want to use. We are using 1Password – a password manager here.

2. To use an extension, go to “Safari” via the “Settings” app.

3. Here, click on Extensions and enable the toggle next to the extension you want to use.

If you want to add more extensions or you haven’t added any extensions yet, click on More extensions and go to the App Store to add more extensions.

Alternatively, once the extensions are added, they can also be managed from the browser itself. Just click on the ‘Aa’ button near the tab bar and select ‘Manage Extensions’.

Apple iOS 15 Safari will allow users to bring the browser back to its previous design.

The latest beta for the Apple iOS 15 includes some helpful bug fixes as the company is using the update to help change the controversial new design for its popular Safari browser.

Apple iOS 15 Redesign

According to the story by ScreenRant, when the new iOS would officially roll out this fall, the new operating system is set to be quite a substantial update for the iPhone touting new redesigned notifications, SharePlay, Focus modes, and a whole host of other much smaller changes.

It might also not be as visually different compared to the whole shift from the iOS 13 to the iOS 14.

The new upgrades, however, do provide quite a good look.

A new aspect of the iOS 15 has raised quite significant criticism in its brand new interface for the Apple Safari.

Apple New Safari URL

The new iOS 15 now attempts to help modernize the design of Safari by moving the URL bar all the way to the bottom in order for users to be able to swipe between tabs. The new UI looks sleek on paper but it is still quite minimalistic.

The Apple iOS 15 is even available for the earlier Apple iPhone 6S and is compatible with every other device after that.

Safari Update

The original design removed a number of old shortcuts from the Safari URL bar and hid them directly behind the new menu button. This makes Safari more cumbersome compared to iOS 14.

The combination with general muscle memory shift directly after the URL bar located at the top makes it easy to see why the changes aren't easily received by everyone.

Apple Safari Shortcuts

Apple release notes said that the bottom bar is now redesigned to show below page content.

9to5Mac folks took a closer look at the redesign and showed a more interesting mix of both old and new. The URL bar is still located at the bottom, but now with the old Safari shortcuts that remain much in demand.

The shortcuts include sharing, back/forward, reading mode, and viewing all tabs.

It now also appears that the URL bar will remain at the bottom when scrolling. This is where it used to float between both the top and the bottom of the Safari screen.

There are a lot of other things that the Apple iOS 15 has to offer.

Apple iOS 15 and iOS 14 Design

For those that don't want the URL bar to be at the bottom, the new Apple iOS 15 beta 6 adds an option to go back to the iOS 14 design. Users can open the Settings app, click on Safari, and a new option located at the top allowing users to choose Tab Bar or Single Tab for the browser.

If users choose Single Tab, Safari looks the same as it has in the past. The company also did something quite similar to the macOS Monterey beta back in July 2021.

This would give people the option to use the old and new tab design whenever browsing from the desktop.
